How to Present Publisher Location in the 7th Edition of APA

APA Style

APA is the official style of documentation of academic sources used by the American Psychological Association (APA). It is considered one of the most commonly used styles in the academic field. It is especially used for citing sources within the field of social and behavioral sciences.

How to Present Publisher Information in the 6th Edition of APA Manual Publication

APA Manual 6th edition requires you to include the publisher location when you cite it from a print book. The city and state should be included for US-based publishers, the city and country for publishers anywhere else. It also requires abbreviating American states and territories to their two-letter form. For publisher locations outside the United States, there is no need to abbreviate the location; instead, the city and the country names should be spelled out.  When you have two or more locations in your reference, note the first location in your reference list, and use a colon after the publisher location.

Here is an example:

Wan, T.H. (2002). Evidence-based health-care management. Boston: Kluwer Academic Publishers.

Publisher Location Is No Longer Included in the Reference List (APA Manual 7th Edition)

In the 7th edition of the APA manual, you do not need to include the publisher location or databases where you cite from a print book. When the author and publisher are the same, omit the publisher as well.

When you cite a reference from a print book or a report, provide the publisher name as briefly as possible, without the publication location. Also, there is no need to abbreviate the publisher name unless it is presented in abbreviated form on the work.

In some cases, references for works with specific locations, such as conference materials, require including the location in the source element. In such cases, you need to add the city, state, or province, and country. For U.S. states, two-letter postal code abbreviations and the analogous abbreviations (if any) for states or provinces in other countries should be used.
